The Seventh
The most exciting moment is the moment when I add the sound… At this moment, I tremble.
— Akira Kurosawa, director
As of late, I have developed a habit of revisiting films for their soundtracks. I have come to realize that many of my fondest cinematic memories are inextricably linked to the power of the audio-visual relationship, particularly in scenes that are closely tied to specific songs. The playlist that I have compiled is a tribute to these memories.
Songs have the ability to become an integral part of the narrative in films when chosen carefully. These choices deserve the utmost recognition. At times, they strengthen the connection with a scene, a character, or even the film as a whole. The seventh art seems to have this anthropophagic ability to absorb its predecessors in its own way, resulting in unforgettable combinations.
I dedicate this playlist and film list to Cinearte Palace, the last street cinema in Juiz de Fora. Tragically, it ended its activities in 2017. Cinearte Palace was more than a special place; it was a cultural and cinematic bastion that resisted commercial doldrums. I have many fond memories there, some of which I am sharing here.
